Is Garageband Good Software For Making Studio Quality Music?

To get the clearest idea about what it feels like to work with Garageband, it is important to note that Garageband is a free music production software. Of course, knowing that there is expensive music software out there may make you question how reliable a free version is.

The bottom line is that Garageband offers many production features.

Just because Garageband is free does not mean it is not worth looking into. Perhaps you have done your own research and found that major music producers have specific software at their disposal for developing studio-quality music when working with an artist.

Garageband can compete with other DAWs, not only because it is free, but because it has the potential to offer just as many opportunities as similar software that costs money. With the ability to use third-party plugins, Garageband provides just as much potential as other studio-quality DAWs.

While it is understandable that DAW at a price may claim to offer a number of exclusive features, you should not count Garageband out of the picture, especially since it also comes on the iPhone – a great way to make beats on the go!

What Does Garageband Offer?

Garageband offers free instrument and drum sounds, Apple Loops, and the ability to use 3rd party plugins.

First off, Garageband has plenty of instrument options to add to your beats. From strings to keys to drums, the amount of sounds you have at your disposal is more than good for free software. In fact, Garageband has a wonderful Drummer Track with many fills, rolls, high-hats, and the ability to edit these sounds in depth.

Apple Loops are another popular feature for Garageband. With Apple Loops, you can easily add riffs to enhance the rhythm, beat, and overall sound of your music.

While you may think using a pre-recorded loop is not always the most original way to add flavor to your music, this is untrue. It’s entry possible to create original music using loops!

Other professional features of Garageband that compete with other studio-quality software include:

  • Pitch correction
  • Time quantization
  • External recording
  • Easy editing

Perhaps the most useful feature of Garageband is its ability to utilize third-party plugins. Not every feature will be covered with the software you use to make your music.

If you appear to be missing something that you would like to add to your track, Garageband allows you to plug in additional software that can be used through Garageband to incorporate certain features.

Do Professionals Use Garageband To Make Music?

The majority of producers in the music business will not be using Garageband. Although Garageband is a great piece of software for getting into music production or for recording music as a hobby, other DAWS like Pro Tools, Ableton, FL Studio, Studio One, and Reaper offers many more features and a smoother workflow.

Does that mean Garageband can’t make studio-quality music?

The short answer is no, Garageband is capable of making studio-quality music.

Garageband offers a wide variety of attributes to aid in creating great music.

With the basic features of Garageband plus the addition of a third-party plugin when needed, there is not much else required for the software to make studio-quality music.

Even some of the most famous artists have used Garageband for some of their most popular songs. It is not a matter of how good or bad people think a DAW is. If you use your skills and the resources at your disposal, you can make studio-quality music.

An example of this is Lil Peep. Lil Peep famously used Garageband to get his career started!

But, to be fair, it is not entirely common for professional producers to use Garageband, but it is certainly not unheard of. Most likely, professionals who use Garageband have paid for at least some additional equipment to enhance their music-producing process.

How Is Garageband A Good Software?

Whether you are looking to teach yourself how to make music or actively produce studio-quality material, Garageband can be a great choice. So, what else makes it worthwhile?

  • Great for beginners
  • Easy use
  • Mobile music production
  • Countless features

Garageband is a good software because it comes with almost as many production features as other DAWs but at zero cost. Especially if you are a beginner, you might as well try your hand at Garageband. It may not suit your fancy in the long run, but it will at least teach you the basics of music production.

When I got my first MacBook in 2012 I was thrilled to have Garageband to start recording music. The stock drums sounds were fantastic and the effects brought life into my guitar. My two projects Alphabetical Keys I and II were both recorded in Garageband using the stock drums and effects!

Takeaway

Garageband is good software for making studio-quality music. Just because it may not have a reputation among the music industry does not mean it cannot help you create studio-quality music. If you take the time to learn the ins and outs of Garageband, you will find yourself making studio-quality beats in no time.
